Stump in a garden in South East London

You have a tree in your SE London garden that needs attention. Maybe it has outgrown its space, a branch is overhanging the neighbour's fence, or it looks like something is wrong with it. The question most homeowners get stuck on is simple: do I call a gardener or a tree surgeon?

Call the wrong one and you either overpay (tree surgeon rates for a job a gardener could handle) or put someone in danger (a gardener attempting work that needs specialist training and equipment). This guide gives you the clear dividing line so you know exactly who to call and what to expect to pay.

The quick version

  • Call a gardener for tree pruning and removal up to 5 metres, stump removal, hedge trimming, shrub pruning, ivy on trees, and general garden maintenance around trees
  • Call a tree surgeon for anything above 5 metres, work near buildings or power lines, large mature tree felling, or a tree that looks diseased or dangerous
  • Cost difference: a gardener in SE London costs £80-£85/hour (2-person team). A tree surgeon costs £600-£900/day (3-person team) or £75-£110/hour
  • The honest rule: if the tree is under 5 metres, we can almost certainly handle it. Above 5 metres, or near buildings and power lines, call a tree surgeon
  • Need advice? Send us photos or WhatsApp us and we will tell you honestly whether it is a job for us or whether you need a tree surgeon

What a Gardener Can Do With Trees

A gardener handles the routine, low-level tree work that keeps your garden tidy and your trees healthy between specialist visits. This is what we do as part of our standard garden maintenance and garden clearance services.

A gardener is the right call for:

  • Pruning and shaping trees up to roughly 5 metres using hand tools and standard equipment
  • Removing small to medium trees up to 5 metres (price TBD, quoted after photos or survey)
  • Stump removal (price TBD, quoted after photos or survey)
  • Trimming and reshaping hedges, including tall hedges accessible from a ladder
  • Removing low-hanging branches that block paths or growing into fences
  • Cutting back ivy, climbers and self-seeded saplings growing on or around trees
  • Clearing fallen leaves, small branches and seasonal debris from around trees
  • Maintaining fruit trees (apple, pear, cherry) at a manageable height
  • Light formative pruning on young trees to shape their growth early

The key distinction is height and complexity. We handle trees up to 5 metres. Beyond that, or where the work involves specialist climbing, rope work, or proximity to buildings and power lines, it crosses into tree surgery territory.

What it costs: Our rates are £83 for the first hour and £65 for each subsequent hour for garden maintenance, or £85/hour for garden clearance (both with a 2-person team, all tools included). Tree-related pruning that falls within a gardener's scope is covered within these rates. See our full gardener cost guide for a complete breakdown. You can also browse examples of pruning and clearance jobs we have completed across SE London.

What a Tree Surgeon Does (And Why It Costs More)

A tree surgeon (also called an arborist) is a specialist who handles the technical, high-risk work that a gardener is not trained or equipped for. They carry NPTC qualifications (chainsaw operation, aerial tree work), specialist climbing gear, chippers, stump grinders, and comprehensive insurance for high-risk work.

Call a tree surgeon for:

  • Crown reduction: reducing the overall size of a tree's canopy while maintaining its shape. This is the most common tree surgery job in SE London gardens where trees have outgrown their space
  • Crown thinning: selectively removing branches within the canopy to let more light through without changing the tree's shape
  • Crown lifting: removing lower branches to increase clearance underneath (for paths, driveways, or buildings)
  • Tree felling: removing a tree completely. Requires sectional dismantling in most SE London gardens where there is no room to fell in one piece
  • Deadwood removal: removing dead branches from within the canopy that could fall and cause injury or property damage
  • Diseased or dangerous trees: any tree showing signs of decay, fungal growth, leaning, cracked trunk, or lifting roots needs a qualified arborist to assess it. This is not optional. A diseased tree near a house, fence, or public path is a safety and liability issue
  • Any work near power lines, buildings, or boundaries: the risk of property damage or injury makes this specialist work regardless of tree size

What it costs in SE London: Tree surgeon pricing in London runs roughly 1.5x higher than the national average due to access difficulties, parking, disposal costs and the density of surrounding property. Here are typical 2026 rates:

Service
Typical London cost
Urban Gardeners (trees up to 5m)
Garden maintenance (includes light pruning)
£80 first hour, £60 subsequent
Garden clearance (includes small tree work)
£85/hour (2-person team)
Tree removal up to 5m
£150-£450
Stump removal
£80-£350
Tree surgeon (trees above 5m)
Tree surgeon day rate (3-person team)
£600-£900
Tree surgeon hourly rate (team)
£75-£110
Small tree removal (up to 15ft / 5m)
£250-£550
Medium tree removal (15-30ft)
£550-£1,200
Large tree removal (30-50ft)
£1,200-£1,700+
Crown reduction (medium tree)
£400-£900
Tree pruning (small to medium)
£150-£600
Stump grinding (large stumps)
£250-£700
Waste removal
£100-£500 depending on volume

Prices in this table are accurate as of publication and may change at any time. Always confirm current pricing with us or with your chosen tree surgeon before booking.

Most tree surgeons also charge a minimum call-out fee of £150-£250 to make a job worth their while. For trees under 5 metres, our rates are significantly lower because the work does not require specialist climbing equipment or a 3-person team.

The Grey Area: Jobs That Could Go Either Way

Some jobs sit on the boundary. Here is how to decide.

A medium-sized tree needs light pruning (removing a few lower branches, tidying the shape). If the tree is under 5 metres, a gardener can handle it at gardener rates. If the tree is above 5 metres, or the branches overhang a building, conservatory or power line, call a tree surgeon.

Ivy has grown up a mature tree and you want it removed. A gardener can cut the ivy at the base and remove what is reachable from ground level. The ivy higher up will die and can be left to fall naturally or removed by a tree surgeon if it needs to come down quickly.

A small self-seeded tree (sycamore, buddleia, elder) has grown where you do not want it. If it is under 5 metres, a gardener can remove it. This is a common job we handle as part of clearance or maintenance visits (tree removal price TBD, quoted after photos). If it has grown beyond 5 metres or is close to a building or boundary wall, that is a tree surgeon job.

A branch has come down in a storm and is sitting in the garden. If it is already on the ground and just needs cutting up and removing, a gardener can handle it as part of a garden clearance. If a broken branch is still hanging in the canopy (a "hung-up" branch), do not touch it. That is a tree surgeon emergency call-out because it can fall unpredictably. If a storm has also damaged your fence, we cover that separately too — see our guide on what to do when your garden fence blows down in South East London.

The honest advice we give our clients: if you send us photos and the job is clearly within our scope, we will handle it at our standard rates. If it needs a tree surgeon, we will tell you so and suggest you get specialist quotes. We would rather lose a job than put our team or your property at risk.

Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas in SE London

This is the part most homeowners do not think about until it is too late, and in South East London it matters more than in most areas.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). A TPO is a legal order made by your local council to protect specific trees. It is a criminal offence to cut down, lop, top, uproot or otherwise damage a TPO tree without the council's written permission. Fines can be unlimited. Bromley alone has over 2,000 TPOs. Lewisham and Greenwich both have significant numbers, particularly around conservation areas and period properties.

Conservation areas. If your property is in a conservation area (and many parts of Blackheath, Brockley, Dulwich, Greenwich, Lee and surrounding areas are), all trees with a trunk diameter over 7.5cm measured at 1.5 metres above the ground are automatically protected. You must give the council 6 weeks written notice before doing any work on them.

How to check: Your borough council's website has interactive maps showing TPOs and conservation area boundaries. Check before you book anyone.

Why this matters for the gardener vs tree surgeon decision: A qualified tree surgeon will check TPO status and handle the council application as part of their service. A gardener may not know to check. If you are unsure whether your tree is protected, check the map yourself before booking anyone, or ask the professional you are hiring to confirm before any work starts.

When to Call Us vs When to Call a Tree Surgeon: The Decision Checklist

Call Urban Gardeners (gardener rates) if:

  • The tree is under 5 metres and needs pruning, shaping or removal
  • You need a stump removed
  • You need hedge trimming, even tall hedges
  • Ivy or climbers need cutting back from trees, fences or walls
  • Small to medium self-seeded trees need removing
  • Fallen branches need clearing from the garden
  • You want general pruning and shaping of fruit trees or ornamental trees
  • The work is part of a broader garden maintenance or clearance visit

Call a tree surgeon if:

  • The tree is above 5 metres
  • The tree is near a building, fence, power line or boundary wall and the work is complex or high-risk
  • A large mature tree needs to be removed entirely
  • You want crown reduction, thinning or lifting on a large mature tree
  • The tree shows signs of disease, decay or structural damage
  • The tree may have a TPO or be in a conservation area and you need someone to handle the council application

Not sure? Send us photos through the contact page with a brief description. We will tell you honestly whether it is a job for us or whether you need a specialist. We would rather point you in the right direction than take on work that is beyond our scope.

How to Find a Good Tree Surgeon in SE London

Since we are being honest about what we do not do, here is what to look for when hiring a tree surgeon.

Check these before you book:

  • NPTC qualifications in chainsaw operation and aerial tree work. Ask to see certificates
  • Public liability insurance (at least £5 million for tree work). Ask for a copy
  • Employers' liability insurance if they have staff
  • Arboricultural Association membership is a good sign but not mandatory
  • Written quote with a clear scope of work, not just a verbal price
  • Waste removal included or quoted separately. Clarify before work starts

Red flags:

  • No insurance documentation when asked
  • Cash-only, no written quote
  • Knocking on doors offering to "take that tree down cheap"
  • Unable or unwilling to check TPO status
  • No qualifications to show

A reputable tree surgeon will be happy to show their credentials. If they are evasive, move on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a gardener use a chainsaw?

Legally, anyone can own a chainsaw in the UK, but using one professionally requires NPTC certification. Most gardeners, including our team, do not carry chainsaw qualifications because the work we do does not require one. If a job needs a chainsaw, it is a tree surgeon job. Attempting chainsaw work without training is one of the most common causes of serious injury in garden work.

How do I know if my tree has a Tree Preservation Order?

Check your borough council's interactive map. Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich all have online TPO maps. If your property is in a conservation area, all trees above a certain size are automatically protected regardless of whether they have an individual TPO. When in doubt, check before booking any work.

Can a gardener remove a tree stump?

Yes, we handle stump removal as part of our services (price TBD, quoted after photos or survey). For very large stumps from mature trees where specialist grinding equipment is needed, a tree surgeon with a dedicated stump grinder may be more appropriate. Send us photos and we will tell you whether we can handle it or whether you need a specialist.

Who is responsible if a tree damages a neighbour's property?

If a tree on your property causes damage to a neighbour's property (falls on their fence, drops a branch on their roof), you may be liable, particularly if you knew the tree was in poor condition and did nothing about it. Regular maintenance and acting on visible signs of disease or decay protects you legally. If you are concerned about a tree's condition, get an arborist assessment rather than ignoring it.

Is it cheaper to get a gardener to do tree work that really needs a tree surgeon?

In the short term, yes. But a gardener attempting work beyond their training risks damaging the tree (improper pruning cuts that lead to disease or regrowth problems), damaging your property, or injuring themselves. If something goes wrong, their insurance may not cover tree surgery work. The tree surgeon's higher rate reflects the training, equipment and insurance that protects you. It is genuinely cheaper in the long run to call the right professional the first time.

Do you recommend specific tree surgeons in SE London?

We do not formally partner with a tree surgeon, but we regularly work alongside them on projects where a garden needs both clearance/landscaping and tree work. If you ask us, we can suggest local arborists we have seen do good work. We would rather connect you with a reliable specialist than see you hire someone unqualified.
