Seeding wins on price and loses on patience. One UK lawn specialist notes grass seed can be delivered for under £10, where turf delivery alone starts closer to £100 (Relentless Gardener). Seed also needs soil temperatures above 10 degrees and weeks where nobody walks on it.
Turf gives you a lawn the day it goes down and a usable one a few weeks later, which is why the RHS recommends it for homes with children or pets. It also smothers the weed seeds waiting in your soil.
Honest version: for a big area on a tight budget where you can wait a season, seed is the smarter spend. For a family garden you want back this month, turf.

New turf wants regular water at the start. An outside tap makes that easy. Without one, you are carrying cans, which gets old fast on a 40m² lawn.

Mid-autumn is the sweet spot, and the workable window runs from mid-autumn to early spring whenever the soil is not frozen or waterlogged, according to the RHS lawn turf guide. The soil is still warm, rain does your watering, and the lawn roots in over winter.
Early spring works too, but you take on the watering through any dry summer spells. Avoid laying from mid-spring into the summer holidays. DIY turfing means hiring a rotavator and roller, ordering topsoil and turf, and giving up a weekend to heavy lifting. Turf should be laid within 24 hours of delivery, so everything lands at once. Tool hire shops price by the day, and a job that slips into a second day costs twice the hire. Wet turf rolls are properly heavy, and the levelling is the part that decides whether the lawn takes.

How long does new turf last?
A real lawn lasts decades if the ground was prepped right and it gets basic care. Artificial grass, by comparison, is quoted at around eight years on average by UK fitters (Cotswold Paving and Landscaping).
How often should you water new turf?
Keep the soil moist until the turf roots, which takes a few weeks. The RHS warns that dry conditions before rooting stress the grass and delay it, so water whenever the top starts to dry.
When can kids and pets go on new turf?
Light use after two to three weeks, full games once it has rooted. Tug a corner gently. If it resists, the roots are in.
Is turfing worth the money?
If you will use the lawn, yes. You get a garden back in weeks and the cost spreads over decades. If it will sit unwatered and unmowed, spend the money on something else.
Can you lay turf on top of an old lawn?
