Charlton is one of the few parts of SE London where the terrain itself shapes what happens in your garden. The area rises steeply from the Thames at New Charlton up through the residential streets of the Charlton Slopes to the village centre around St Luke's Church and Charlton House. That gradient means sloping rear gardens, uneven drainage, and soil conditions that change depending on where exactly you are in SE7.
On the slopes, Victorian terraces sit on ground that was once quarried for sand and gravel - Maryon Park's Gilbert's Pit is a Site of Special Scientific Interest precisely because of these exposed geological layers. Some gardens on the higher ground have lighter, sandier subsoil from the old workings. Others, particularly on the lower streets closer to Woolwich Road and the riverside, sit on heavier London clay with a high water table from the Thames. That variation means a lawn treatment that works on one street in Charlton can fail two roads away.
We cover Charlton SE7 regularly - it neighbours our Eltham SE9 base and is one of the postcodes we know best. If you need a gardener in SE7 who understands the slopes, the soil variation, and the specific challenges that come with gardening on a hill, we are a call away.

We are a full-service gardening company. Whether you need a one-off clearance or a complete garden redesign, we handle it. For a full breakdown of what each service costs, see our prices page.

Before/after of a garden clearance with Urban Gardeners.
Overgrown hedges, ivy on boundary walls, brambles, accumulated green waste - we clear it properly. In Charlton this is a common first job on the older Victorian terraces where rear gardens slope steeply and get neglected because they are difficult to access and maintain. Gardens backing onto Maryon Park and Maryon Wilson Park also deal with encroaching growth, self-seeded trees, and heavy leaf accumulation.
Clearance starts at £85/hour with a two-person team. Photo quotes within 24 hours for most jobs; we will visit first for anything larger or more complex. Read our guide on what garden clearance in South East London actually costs and includes.
Regular upkeep keeps costs down and gardens healthy. Pricing is £80 for the first hour, £60 for each hour after that, with no minimum charge.
Sloping gardens on the Charlton Slopes need more frequent attention than flat plots - growth runs faster on south-facing inclines, weeds establish quickly on exposed soil, and anything not maintained tends to slide downhill. A seasonal maintenance plan keeps that under control.
Our garden maintenance cost guide for South East London breaks down exactly what affects the price.

Lawn mowing with Urban Gardeners.
Same hourly rate as maintenance. We mow, edge, strim, collect clippings, and advise on lawn health. Lawns on sloping ground in Charlton face specific problems: water drains off the surface before it soaks in, topsoil migrates downhill over time, and mowing on a gradient wears unevenly. Lower-lying gardens closer to the Thames have the opposite issue - waterlogging and clay compaction.

Before/after of a artificial grass project with Urban Gardeners.
Natural turf installation runs £15 to £28 per sqm (includes turf, labour, and topsoil). Artificial grass is £60 to £90 per sqm and includes full excavation, sub-base, membrane, and installation.
Turfing on a slope requires different ground preparation than turfing on a flat plot. Soil needs to be stabilised, drainage managed to prevent washout, and turf laid and pegged to prevent slippage while it roots. We assess slope, soil type, and drainage as part of every turfing survey in SE7.
Our post on natural vs artificial grass for South East London gardens covers the real pros and cons. Our turfing cost guide for SE London has the full price breakdown.

Before/after of a landscaping project with Urban Gardeners.
From a small refresh with replanting and gravel to a full redesign with new patio, fencing, turf, and planted borders. Projects typically range from £1,200 for a light refresh up to £18,000 for a full transformation.
Landscaping on sloping Charlton gardens often involves terracing, retaining walls, or stepped designs to create usable flat areas within a garden that drops away from the house. Many of the Victorian properties on the slopes have long rear gardens (50 to 80 feet is common) that benefit from being divided into zones. We survey for free, quote in writing, and follow a clear process from design through to final review.
Our garden landscaping cost guide for South East London gives you a realistic picture of what different project types cost.
Closeboard panels at £260 each, standard panel fencing from £230 to £280. All pricing includes materials, labour, post installation, and concrete setting. Storm damage repairs from £150 to £300 per section.
Fencing on a slope requires stepped panels rather than standard level installation, which adds time and complexity. On the lower-lying streets in Charlton, high ground moisture accelerates post rot, so we use pressure-treated timber and concrete posts as standard. Our post on what to do after storm fence damage in South East London covers the repair process.

Before/after of a jet washing cleaning with Urban Gardeners.
Pressure washing for patios, driveways, pathways, decking, and exterior walls. Priced at £4/m², minimum job size £140 (40m²). No harsh chemicals - safe for pets and plants.
North-facing patios on the slopes accumulate algae and moss fast, particularly where mature trees from Charlton Park or Maryon Wilson Park overhang neighbouring gardens. An annual clean makes a real difference. See our patio cleaning price guide for South East London for a budget estimate.

Before/after of a decking project with Urban Gardeners.
Softwood, hardwood, and composite options available. A small softwood deck (up to 12m²) starts at around £960 to £1,920. Larger or more complex structures are quoted after a free survey.
Decking on a sloping garden often serves as a way to create a level entertaining area near the house, with the garden dropping away below. This requires proper sub-frame engineering on the downhill side. For a full breakdown of costs by size and material, see our decking cost guide for South East London.

The Charlton Slopes are the defining feature of SE7's residential geography. The land rises sharply from Woolwich Road and the railway at the bottom up to Charlton Village and Charlton Park at the top. Many Victorian terraces on these streets have rear gardens that drop several metres from the back door to the rear boundary.
That gradient creates specific gardening problems. Rainwater runs off the surface before it soaks in, which starves lawns of moisture while causing erosion at the bottom of the slope. Topsoil migrates downhill over time, leaving thin, compacted ground at the top and waterlogged accumulation at the bottom. Mowing on a steep incline wears unevenly and is difficult with standard equipment. Retaining walls and fences take more structural stress on sloping ground than on flat plots.
If your lawn is thin at the top and boggy at the bottom, gradient is the reason. We address this during every survey and recommend appropriate solutions - from terracing and drainage channels to ground stabilisation before any turfing work.
Charlton's geological history is unusually varied for London. Maryon Park was formerly a sandpit, and Gilbert's Pit within it is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its exposed Paleogene sediment layers. This means the soil under Charlton gardens is not uniform. Some plots on the higher ground have lighter, sandier subsoil from the old quarry and gravel workings. Others, particularly on the lower streets, sit on heavy London clay.
This variation matters because lawn care and turfing that works on clay will not necessarily work on sandy subsoil, and vice versa. We assess soil type on every survey in SE7 rather than assuming one approach fits the whole postcode.
Charlton has an unusual concentration of parkland for an urban area. Charlton Park, Maryon Park, Maryon Wilson Park, and Hornfair Park all sit within or directly adjacent to residential streets. Gardens backing onto or near these parks deal with heavy shade from mature canopy trees, significant leaf fall from October through December, and surface roots spreading into garden soil.
Maryon Wilson Park is a designated Local Nature Reserve, and Maryon Park contains trees that may be subject to preservation orders. We check for TPOs before any work starts and flag anything that may need council permission from the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
Charlton's housing stock is mixed. The sought-after Victorian terraces on the slopes have generous rear gardens but steep gradients and often limited side access. The 1930s semis around Hornfair Park and Canberra Road have wider plots and better vehicle access but shallower gardens. Newer builds near the riverside and around the Charlton Riverside area have smaller, flatter plots, often with builder-grade finishes that were not designed to last.

Yes - we work on sloping gardens across the Charlton Slopes regularly. Mowing, clearance, turfing, and landscaping all require different techniques on a gradient compared to a flat plot. We assess slope angle and soil conditions during the survey and plan the work accordingly.
We can trim branches that overhang your property from your side of the boundary. However, trees within the park may be subject to Tree Preservation Orders managed by the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We always check before doing any work near park boundaries and advise you on what is and is not possible.
Send us a few photos of your garden via the contact form or call 07760800457. We reply within 24 hours with an honest time estimate and cost. For larger jobs like landscaping, turfing, or fencing, we book a free on-site survey before quoting.
