Blackheath is one of the most distinctive neighbourhoods in South East London, and its gardens reflect that. Victorian terraces with long, narrow strips backing onto each other. Edwardian semis with established trees that have been there longer than anyone can remember. Clay-heavy soil that holds water in winter and cracks in summer. And that open Heath exposure that means your garden takes a battering when the wind picks up.
We've been doing this work in SE London for over 12 years, and Blackheath is one of our regular areas. We know the challenges here specifically. If you need a gardener in Blackheath who actually understands the conditions your garden is dealing with, we're a phone call away.
Spring and autumn are our busiest periods in Blackheath - if you're planning a bigger job, booking ahead helps.

We're a full-service gardening company, which means you don't have to call three different people for three different jobs. Whether you need a one-off clearance before winter or a complete garden redesign, we handle it. For a full breakdown of what each service costs, see our prices page.

Before/after of a garden clearance with Urban Gardeners.
Overgrown hedges, ivy that's taken over a wall, brambles, years of accumulated green waste - we clear it properly. Clearance starts at £85/hour with a two-person team. Photo quotes within 24 hours for most jobs; we'll visit first for anything larger or more complex. Not sure what's involved? Read our guide on what garden clearance in South East London actually costs and includes.
Regular upkeep keeps costs down and gardens healthy. We do one-off tidy-ups and flexible ongoing maintenance plans. Pricing is £80 for the first hour, £60 for each hour after that, with no minimum charge. First-time clients usually find that booking at least two hours gets the garden into a good baseline.

Lawn mowing with Urban Gardeners.
Same hourly rate as maintenance. We mow, edge, strim, collect clippings, and can advise on lawn health. For treatments like aeration, moss removal, or overseeding, we do a free on-site survey first - treatments typically start from £60-80 depending on size and condition.

Before/after of a artificial grass project with Urban Gardeners.
Natural turf installation runs £15-28 per sqm (includes turf, labour, and topsoil). Artificial grass is £60-90 per sqm and includes full excavation, sub-base, membrane, and the grass itself. All turfing starts with a free survey, with a written quote within 3 business days. If you're weighing up your options, our post on natural vs artificial grass for South East London gardens covers the real pros and cons. We also have a full turfing cost guide for SE London if you want to get a sense of budgets before you call.

Before/after of a landscaping project with Urban Gardeners.
From a small refresh with replanting and gravel to a full redesign with new patio, fencing, turf, and planted borders. Projects typically range from £1,200 for a light refresh up to £18,000 for a full transformation. We survey for free, quote in writing, and follow a clear process from design through to final review. See the prices page for a full breakdown of landscaping project ranges.
Closeboard panels at £260 each, standard panel fencing from £230-280. All pricing includes materials, labour, post installation, and concrete setting. Storm damage repairs from £150-300 per section. Had a fence blown down recently? Our post on what to do after storm fence damage in South East London and what it costs to replace walks you through the process.

Before/after of a jet washing cleaning with Urban Gardeners.
Pressure washing for patios, driveways, pathways, decking, and exterior walls. Priced at £4/m², minimum job size £140 (40m²). No harsh chemicals - safe for pets and plants. See our patio cleaning price guide for South East London if you want a budget estimate first.

Before/after of a decking project with Urban Gardeners.
Softwood, hardwood, and composite options available. A small softwood deck (up to 12m²) starts at around £960-1,920. Larger or more complex structures are quoted after a free survey. For a full breakdown of costs by size and material, see our decking cost guide for South East London.

Most of South East London deals with clay soil to some degree, but gardens close to the Heath and along the older streets of SE3 have a particular set of conditions that affect what grows, what survives, and what maintenance actually looks like in practice.
Blackheath sits on London clay. This means water doesn't drain quickly in autumn and winter, which leads to waterlogged lawns, moss problems, and root stress in trees and shrubs. In summer, the same clay dries out and cracks, which puts pressure on established plantings. If your lawn looks patchy or your borders are struggling to drain, the soil is usually the starting point. We've written about dealing with poor drainage in South East London gardens if you want to understand the options.
We account for this in lawn treatments, turfing prep, and landscaping groundwork. Laying turf or paving on unprepared clay without proper ground levelling and drainage consideration is one of the most common mistakes that leads to expensive fixes later.
Properties on or near the Heath itself, and those on the higher, open stretches of SE3, deal with exposure that more sheltered parts of South East London don't. Fences take more punishment. Hedges grow unevenly on the windward side. Established trees that have been through decades of weather can develop weak points that aren't visible until a storm brings something down.
We pay attention to this when assessing clearance or fencing jobs in Blackheath. A fence that would be fine in a sheltered Greenwich courtyard needs to be installed more solidly here. Our post on choosing the right wooden fence for South East London conditions covers what to consider.
Victorian and Edwardian properties in Blackheath often have mature trees in relatively small gardens - trees that were planted when the streets were new and have now grown into significant structures. This affects light, root spread, what you can plant underneath, and what you can build near them. Some are under Tree Preservation Orders.
We're experienced working around established trees, and we'll flag anything that looks like it might be protected or structurally concerning before we start work. If you're dealing with a tree that looks unhealthy, our post on how to identify the signs of a dying tree in your garden is a useful starting point.
The layout of many Blackheath streets means rear garden access is often only through the house or via a shared back passage. This affects how we bring equipment in, how we remove green waste, and how we get materials to the back for larger jobs. It adds time to some jobs and we account for that honestly in quotes rather than adding surprise charges later.
We cover all of SE3 and the surrounding areas. If you're just outside Blackheath, we're likely already working near you.

Ongoing visits can be as short as one hour once the garden is in a maintained state. For a broader view of gardening costs in the area, see our prices page or our gardener cost guide for South East London.

Yes, and we're familiar with the typical layout and access constraints that come with period properties in SE3 - narrow rear access, established trees, clay-heavy soil, smaller enclosed gardens. We factor all of that into how we plan and quote a job, rather than treating every garden the same.
